Things You Should Know Before Moving from India to Europe for Your MBA 2024

Essential tips for Indian students

Many prospective students from India will be looking towards Europe for their MBA education. With a diverse array of prestigious business schools, cultural richness and global career opportunities, Europe is an attractive destination.

However, making such a significant move involves several important considerations. So here are 10 essential things you should know before moving from India to Europe for your MBA.

1. Diverse range of programs

European business schools offer a wide variety of MBA programs, each with its unique strengths. Whether you’re looking for a one-year accelerated program or a more traditional two-year course, there are numerous options to fit your career goals and personal circumstances. Research different schools to find the program that best aligns with your aspirations.

2. Language requirements

While many MBA programs in Europe are taught in English, knowing the local language can be a significant advantage, especially when it comes to networking and job placements. Consider taking language classes before you move, as this can also help you adapt to your new environment more easily.

“Students do not need to have any French language skills to attend our MBA and be successful,” notes Sara Vanos, executive director for MBA admissions at HEC Paris. “However, they should be aware that if they are targeting employment in France post-MBA, French will make the journey smoother.”

Therefore, HEC Paris offers French language classes at varying levels as a part of its MBA Program.

3. Financial planning

Tuition fees for MBA programs in Europe can vary widely. Additionally, you need to account for the cost of living, which can be high in cities like London, Paris and Zurich. It’s crucial to plan your finances carefully, explore scholarship opportunities, and understand the cost of living in your destination city.

“It is critical to understand the total cost of your MBA, not just tuition costs,” says Vanos.

4. Visa and immigration

Navigating visa and immigration requirements is a critical step. Each country has its own set of rules for student visas. Ensure you start the application process well in advance and understand the documentation needed, including proof of financial stability and health insurance, if required.

“If you have been accepted by a Spanish school like IESE and have a southern or western Indian address on your passport, you fall under the Mumbai consulate’s jurisdiction whereas if you are from central, north or east India, the Delhi consulate would be where you apply for a student visa,” says Shubham Chawla, an MBA student from India at Madrid’s IESE Business School.

He adds: “Two top considerations for an Indian student planning to pursue an MBA in Europe would be, first, to apply in the earlier rounds and second, reach out to a second-year student or new alumnus from your future school, preferably from the same region back in India to ensure all bases are covered.”

5. Cultural adaptation

Moving to Europe means immersing yourself in a new culture. So be prepared for cultural differences and take the time to learn about social norms and practices in your host country. Embracing cultural differences will enrich your experience and help you build better relationships with classmates and locals.

“India is very diverse so it is hard to generalize on cultural differences but if you embrace this new experience by putting yourself out there, learn about other cultures by sharing your own and act with equal parts respect, curiosity and love, you can overcome all cultural differences,” Chawla says.

Rossana Camera, head of recruiting and admissions at Italy’s SDA Bocconi School of Management, says: “In Europe, communication tends to be more direct compared to India. Students should get used to expressing their opinions clearly and expecting the same from others.”

6. Career opportunities

Europe offers a wealth of career opportunities, but it’s essential to understand the job-market dynamics in your chosen country. Some European countries have more robust job markets in certain industries. Utilize your school’s career services to gain insights and make connections with potential employers.

7. Networking and alumni connections

European MBA programs are known for their strong alumni networks and industry connections. It’s wise therefore, to actively engage with alumni and attend networking events to expand your professional circle. Building relationships during your studies can significantly enhance your job prospects after graduation.

8. Quality of education

Europe boasts some of the world’s top business schools, such as INSEAD, London Business School, and IE Business School. These institutions are renowned for their high academic standards, diverse student bodies, and excellent faculty. Research the schools thoroughly to understand their strengths and how they can help you achieve your career goals.

9. Travel opportunities

One of the perks of studying in Europe is the ease of travel across the continent. The proximity of different countries allows you to explore various cultures and business environments, providing a broader perspective and enriching your MBA experience. Take advantage of the opportunity to travel and learn beyond the classroom.

10. Personal growth and development

Moving to a new country for your MBA is not just about academic and career growth; it’s also a journey of personal development. Living independently in a foreign country will challenge you in new ways, helping you develop resilience, adaptability, and a global mindset. Embrace the experience as an opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.

Pursuing an MBA in Europe can, ultimately, be a transformative experience for students from India. Take the time to research, plan and immerse yourself fully in this exciting next chapter of your life.
